An article in the Bay Area Reporter by Matthew S. Bajko indicates that our beloved Jane Warner Plaza, at the intersection of Castro Street, 17th Street and Market Street will be upgraded as part of a larger sidewalk improvement project.  Residents were asked to vote on a number of different projects in terms of importance to them, and the Jane Warner Plaza modifications edged out the other contenders.

The Plaza is an important part of the Castro neighborhood, which regularly sees hundreds of people every week enjoying the relative respite of the chairs and plants at an otherwise bustling and busy intersection.  Named after well loved lesbian Patrol Special Police Officer, Jane Warner, who passed away in 2010 after a long battle with Cancer, the Plaza has become a focal point for many community activities, meetings, rallies and memorials.

We’re happy to hear that the Plaza will undergo some improvements to make it even more amenable and enjoyable for everyone.
